Competing in Tokyo

15 YEAR OLD former local swimmer Kyle Chalmers will experience life on the international swimming circuit when he goes to Tokyo next month for the Japanese Junior Olympic Cup.

Kyle was expecting to leave for Canada tomorrow for the 2013 Canadian Age Swimming Championships but last Thursday was informed by Swimming Australia he was one of 13 swimmers selected to go to Japan. discount oakleys

Kyle's dad Brett Chalmers said they didn't know what events Kyle would swim in as they had not received a lot of information, but the chance with Swimming Australia to swim in Tokyo had taken precedence over what would have been a Swimming SA development trip.

Because Kyle swam so well at recent events including the Australian Age Swimming Championships he gained enough points for selectors to also put the spotlight on his coach.

Mr Chalmers said if swimmers gained enough points during competitions selectors look at what coaches to take to international events. oakleys outlet

"Kyle is fortunate enough his swimming coach is going too," Mr Chalmers said.

He will leave for Tokyo on August 22 and will return to Australia on September 1.

While the dates for both competitions did not overlap, Mr Chalmers said it was best to choose one or the other.

"It wouldn't be good for his development to do two international swims that close together," Mr Chalmers said.

Mr Chalmers said they were anxious about Kyle being away from home for that time, but knew there would be coaches and managers there to guide the swimmers.

It is hoped it will not be the only international opportunity for Kyle, who only turned 15 late last month.

"Hopefully it's the first of many," Mr Chalmers said.
